ELHOF…

…Extended Library Hours on Fridays!

15 days! That’s how many days are left before the spring semester is officially over. This means you likely have papers to write, research assignments to complete, and collaborative group projects to ‘square up’. Don’t worry; we’ve got your back!

In order to accommodate student need for additional research and study time, the Cato Campus Library – CT 250 will be open on Friday, April 29 & May 1, from 8am to 12noon.

The law library will be open regular hours, including 9am -1pm on Saturday, through May 7.

Need a space for collaborative group projects and/or study?  Sign up in the library to reserve time in the group study room – CT270.

The Cato Library Services Team enjoyed assisting you with your information and research needs and wishes you success! To those of you graduating and off to ‘greener pastures’, Congratulations!

Owe $$ (Fines) for overdue library materials? We’re “forgiving” them!

Starting Monday, April 25 through May 26, the CPCC Libraries are waiving library fines for overdue library materials that you return; and for outstanding fines owed for materials previously returned.

Pretty sweet, eh? We agree! Taking advantage of this opportunity is simple: Bring in some of the priority food items  to help us fill our food barrels and we’ll waive fines. All materials must be returned in good condition. Sorry, this deal excludes waiving of replacement fees for lost and damaged materials.

No overdue books or outstanding fees? You can still bring in food items. Last semester during our Amnesty- “fine forgiveness” Campaign, the CPCC Libraries collected approximately 706 pounds of food for the local Loaves and Fishes food pantries. In order for us to exceed this number, we need your participation.

Bring ‘em on in… we look forward to seeing you in the library soon!

April showers bring flowery words…and candy!

Help us celebrate National Poetry Month by checking out new titles like The 100 Best African American Poems, edited by Nikki Giovanni.  Grab a piece of candy and add words to make a new verse in our poem.  We’ll keep track of it daily and at the end of the month, we’ll put it all together and share our Cato poem.  After a few days, it’s already taking shape:

Her cloudlike dreams must be visions of silence, told while crimson leaves play under trees, never really silent as life spirals through the world without ground.  Where the soul is wise, a moment would be sad.  A fool always does smile with quiet sadness…

While you’re munching on jelly beans and creating epic poetry, please take a moment to celebrate National Library Week.  Share your favorite library moments or just tell us what we’re doing right (let’s save what we’re doing not-so-right for the other 51 weeks of the year).

Got A Question? Let the Library Help

Pictured above is the homepage of Library Learning Express, one of NC Live's many databases

If you are looking for an answer to a question like “Where can I find a great novel?”, “Where can I find practice SAT tests” or “How can I improve my chances of passing my US Citizenship test?” then your campus library has your answer. NC Live which can be accessed through CPCC ‘s library webpage  provides free access to databases containing more than 50,000 newspapers, journals, magazines, encyclopedias, e-books, e-audio, and streaming video titles for North Carolina citizens.  People can access Novelist to search for a great novel, the PBS Video Collection to watch a series or documentary or Academic Search Premier to research a wide range of topics.

The library also offers access to an online resource named Library Learning Express. On Library Learning Express you can quickly set up an account by creating a username, a password and entering your email address. After setting up your account you can begin using online tutorials. Courses, which are multiple tutorials on one topic, are also available. There are courses in Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Access and Business Writing, just to name a few.

Library Learning Express also has several practice tests to help you prepare for occupational exams and standardized tests such as the Graduate Record Exam, Civil Service Exam, Nursing Assistant Certification Exam and the US Citizenship Exam.  In addition to courses and practice tests, this online resource also has an area focused on improving job skills, building resumes and searching for jobs called the Job & Career Accelerator. North Carolina citizens who are not currently students can access NC Live at their Public Library.

Visit the Research Database page  at the library’s website to get started.
